Once upon a time, only five African nations got to represent the continent on football’s greatest stage. Thankfully, with plans to expand the World Cup from 32 to 48 teams approved, the continent shall also enjoy an additional four World Cup spots following appeals from Africa’s football governing bodies. The decision to honor the appeals was made in Manama, Bahrain at a meeting of the FIFA Council.

With the new allocations, there shall be 8 slots for Asia, 6 for North and Central America, 6 for South America, 16 for Europe, and 1 for Oceania while the other two slots shall be decided on via an inter-continental qualification playoff between six teams.
