Boko Haram seize Borno military base

These Boko Haram members never truly relent in their efforts. The latest is that they have taken control of a military base in Baga, Borno state as disclosed by a senator.

Residents of Baga, who fled by boat to neighbouring Chad, said many people had been killed and the town set ablaze.

Baga, scene of a Nigerian army massacre in 2013, was the last town in the Borno North area under government control.

Residents of Baga who have fled to Chad claim they rose on Saturday only to meet heavy gunfire from all sides of the town.

Maina Maaji Lawan, senator for Borno North, told the BBC “civilians had run “helter skelter” – “some into the forest, some into the desert”.

Communications with the town were cut off and exact information about casualty numbers could not be confirmed, he said.

The senator also mentioned that the people of Borno were particularly unhappy because of the fact that there had been no resistance from the military.
