Custodian Debate: Buhari, The lesser of two evils.

Posted on

This quarter to elections makes one think, doesn’t it? It’s really a debate on picking the lesser evil, oscillating between a contentious military leader and an inadequate, more diffident democrat or so I see it. I’m going to unapologetically sound like a Buhari Stan but we will all be fine. Those who lived through Buhari rule know best what they went through. Some sins still remain unforgiven. But here is where the plot twists, for someone seen as such a monster to even be considered by many including those who lived through his tenure as a military ruler speaks volumes of how much Jonathan has failed us.

Now here’s the thing, you know that saying, when in Rome, do as the Romans. Buhari was a military leader. Being a military leader has its own, shall I say codes. One cannot now expect a chicken egg from a duck. Now, if Buhari wanted to throw on his military hat again and dictate to us unjustly, whip us and ask us to frog jump on the road, I reckon democracy won’t be the first thing on his mind. Do we really think with that mindset Buhari would be sporting Yomi casual, chief cap and James Bond suits to sway the public?

I’m not even trying to tell anyone who to vote for, all I’m saying is that I’d rather vote with hope of the unexpected than a certitude of continued inadequacy. I don’t want to keep sleeping with one eye open, with no light and a hike in the price of Mr Biggs meatpie on my mind.

How I see it is I deserve better. Nigeria deserves better. We all do. And there’s nowhere to go but up. Whoever takes that seat must realise that. It’s time for us to realise that we do. Not everyday eyebrows on fleek, some days your passport too. And personally, the more I realise I, as a Nigerian, deserve better, the more faith I have in that gap toothed leader because hate him all you want but that is one thing Buhari is, a leader. And we have gotten to a point where Nigeria needs to be told what to do. Needs to be motivated to do better.

Swag mama P really doesn’t appeal to me too often especially with her speeches. It hurts my feelings that she is representing me as a woman internationally and often makes me wonder if the ones with Michelle Obama have two heads but that woman supports her husband. In the midst of it all, she stands by him.

All I’m saying is vote as a Nigerian who wants a better Nigeria. Whether your confidence is in Goodluck or Buhari or any other candidate.  As opposed to voting based on that bag of rice you’re about to cook to go along with my cool stories given to you to sway your vote. Vote because you know you deserve better. Vote because you believe in us as a nation. Vote because it’s up to you to be ardent about taking charge of your home.

I just want a better Nigeria. That I feel Buhari will do a better job does not undermine Jonathan as a leader if he emerges the winner of the 2015 presidential elections or any other candidate contesting. Whoever does win needs our support and relentless encouragement. Violence to any degree will be cataclysmic and will serve no productive purpose. Sometimes it may be hard but loving your country is necessary. Love it hard enough to not only want better but do better. Let’s reach a consensus ad idem to be better people which will lead to a better Nigeria. Everything comes down to you. May the best man (or woman) win #NigeriaDecides
