End of the Year Review: Best & Worst Trends

Posted on

Oluwamayowa Idowu: Best Trend: Pass.

Worst Trend: Token Feminists. Can people show us their real selves instead of doing stuff for good press?

People crying about certain celebrities not talking about certain Race issues. If you have to ask them to talk, should you even care about what they have to say?

Aisha Modibbo: Ugh. Aren’t we all tired of faux outrage? It’s exhausting. Leave Kim Kardashian alone for Pete sake! Although after doing some thinking I decided that maybe people shouldn’t stop talking about Kim because it might depress the economy. There are so many people that count on her for income. I’m not even trying to shade her family members. I’m talking about her entourage, paparazzi, daytime talk show hosts, and even fucking CNN.

I joined Tumblr this year and I’m big on the portrait memes. I also like the ones where they juxtapose two photos joking that they’re of a famous celebrity who has aged then asking you if you feel old yet e.g. “Remember Chad from High School Musical? This is him. Feel old yet?” next to a photo of Morgan Freeman. They’re hysterical!! I’m so here for them.

Temitayo Ayorinde: Best trend : Chelsea boots Worst trend: Chelsea boots

Amaka Onyemenam: Best trend: Peplum hems. They’re very ladylike and graceful.

Worst trend: Disrespecting the President.

I have always been of the opinion that the average Nigerian man is ignorant of the workings of his government. So that, even when the right moves are made by key players, that man will never know. And really, sometimes he doesn’t even care to know. He’s happy to rely on Linda Ikeji for his socio-political knowledge.

So it annoys me to no great end that an alarming number of citizens brazenly resort to name-calling the President of the country. How did we degenerate as a people to the point where we can openly call our own elected president ‘retard, otuokpe drunkard,’ etc?

GEJ’s competence is irrelevant here- the mere fact that he is President demands respect in and of itself. I think, that this disregard; not just for the office of the president but for all things government, is reflective on us all in our day to day lives. Small wonder then, that that policeman is happy to take a bribe and allow a culprit go free: each of us contributing in a small, but ruinous way to the state of our nation.

How should the rest of the world look at us? And you’d have to be rather unreasonable if you think the world’s opinion is irrelevant.

This disrespect is a trend that has reached new heights this year with increased social media involvement amongst Nigerians.

It is one that needs to stop.

Demola Fashola: Best Trend: French minimalism

Worst Trend: Anything worn by Kim Kardashian. I’m sorry she may sit front row at Givenchy shows in Paris with her daughter but Kim is a masterclass in how to avoid letting it all hang out. I mean I’m all for a woman owning her own femininity but come on! You don’t have to wear a body stocking as a dress before people find you sexy.
