End of Year Review: Song of the Year

Oluwamayowa Idowu: I don’t like Chris Brown. I haven’t listened to any of his albums since 2007’s Exclusive. Whilst I think he’s talented, he’s made it a habit to constantly do things that make me question his sanity. Loyal is my song of the year and rightfully so for the manner in which he made us sing some those very politically incorrect lyrics so unashamedly.

I tend to find humor in mundane things as attested by the choice of my favorite song off my favorite album this year. Sam Smith’s Not in That Way tells the story of the awkwardness that ensues when one tries to transcend the ‘Friend’ zone for the ‘Bae’ zone.

On the Nigerian front, Yemi Alade’s Johnny had heavy replay value as did Dorobucci. It was catchy and creative. Sort of. Doro Banger Super Hit.

Aisha Modibbo: Like Call Me Maybe, Hot Nigga – Bobby Shmurda is probably going to get nominated for a Grammy and that would be a damn shame.

Temitayo Ayorinde: Anything by the 1975 with a niche video.

Timi-Dakolo-BTS
Amaka Onyemenam: I’ve barely listened to (new) music this year. But, my song of the year though would be Timi Dakolo’s Iyawo mi. It puts a smile on my face and ideas of love in my head. So, besides the fact that it’s a lovely, lovely song (and video), you can tell that he takes his craft seriously.

More, please!!

Demola Fashola: Stay With Me by Sam Smith. I absolutely love this song and I think Sam Smith did a great job with a song that could very well have become a whiny piece of trash in the wrong hands.
