If our Government fails, we shall not.

The Mirabel Centre has been one of the more relevant topics over the past week. The Centre has been central to the rehabilitation of unfortunate rape victims in Lagos Stare since 2013. They need our help if they are to continue running, they are running out of funding and it is extremely important that does not happen.

Here’s why;

  • In Lagos State since 2010, over 12120 females have suffered rape.
  •  We victim blame. Instead of focusing on apprehending offenders, we discuss things like the type of dress she wore and make women feel ashamed for being violated.
  • Our government has shown they are not ready to assist rape victims by being unable to set in place any rape relief centre in the state.

In a state that has recorded 12,120 rape cases in the past 4 years, we don’t have a single government funded rape relief centre! Think about that! 12,120 individuals have gone through unbearable situations, that’s an average of 3030 people per year and the most they get is to know that their rapist went through a trial? Is that really where it should end? I heavily doubt it.

Rape victims are often scarred for life. That singular occurrence haunts many rape victims constantly and as such, proper rehabilitation is priceless. It should be a standard. Seeing as Mirabel Centre has committed to making sure that rape victims can live normal lives, they are priceless in our society and should be supported.

My take on this is simple, if our government fails to provide its citizens with the help they need, we must take the responsibility upon ourselves to fix that deficit.

Support Mirabel Centre and help them continue to provide what our government has failed to. Donate to their cause by clicking here.
