Movie Review: The Wedding Party

Posted on

Never before has a Nollywood movie had a mishmash of stars acting in a near perfect unison. When I first saw the trailer, I was fascinated especially when I saw Sola Sobowale a.k.a Toyin Tomato digging it at the Wedding Party.

If you think 30 days in Atlanta is hilarious, you should definitely see The Wedding Party.

Directed by award-winning filmmaker, Kemi Adetiba and produced by Mo Abudu, The Wedding Party features Banky W (Dozie Onwuka), Adesua Etomi (Dunni Coker), Sola Sobowale (Tinuade Coker),  Alibaba (Bamidele Coker), Richard Mofe-Damijo (Felix Onwuka), Ireti Doyle (Obianuju Onwuka), Zainab Balogun (Wonu), AY (MC), Ikechukwu (Sola), Beverly Naya (Rosie), Emma OhMaGod (Pastor Leke) and a host of others.

The plot is centered around Dunni Coker (Adesua Etomi) a 24-year-old art gallery owner and only daughter of her parents about to marry the love of her life, IT entrepreneur Dozie (Banky W). The couple took a vow of chastity and are looking forward to an earth-shattering first night together as a  married couple.

Although, there is a little bit of ‘over acting’ in some scenes, the casting of this movie could not be better if they tried. All the players fit in like square pegs in tailored holes. Besides the two lead acts; Dozie & Dunni’s sublime execution, Sola Sobowale ‘killed it’ if you know what I mean and her entrance at the wedding reception just brings memories to the fore (it stills plays in my head). Who knew Ikechukwu was such a good actor? Well, I didn’t. A minus on the casting though was the overabundance of extras.

The originality in the Wedding Party and the fact that it brings the Nigerian reality to bare is second to none. The reception will remind you of a typical Nigerian wedding. From the perfect music, to the trendy Naija slangs, perfect locations, costumes and every other thing showed the beauty of the Nigerian heritage.

The excellence and expertise displayed in the movie is very impressive and arguably rivals productions from Hollywood & Bollywood. Comedy movies are not only way for the audience laugh-out-loud but also a satire of the society and this movie did justice to that.

By the power vested in me, I rate the Wedding Party 8/10.
