Unforgettable World Cup Moments: Nigeria beats Spain at France 98

Posted on

The years leading to France 98 had been turbulent for the Nigerian team. They were unable to defend their African crown in 1996 as a result of complications with dictator, Sani Abacha and this led to their exclusion from the 1998 competition. Being deprived of competitive football should have limited the team but they proved their worth against a strong Spanish side with the likes of Raul, Zubizarreta, Hierro and Luis Enrique. Despite going down twice against the Spaniards, the team buoyed by one slightly fortuitous goal never gave up. Sunday Oliseh’s volley was a worthy winner. The celebration to Joseph Dosu was also touching.
