WHO intervenes as Cholera outbreak kills scores in Zimbabwe

The World Health Organization (WHO) said at least 45 people have been killed by cholera in Zimbabwe in the past three weeks.

Cholera outbreaks have occurred frequently in Zimbabwe’s cities where safe drinking water and sanitation facilities are becoming scarce.

A total of 4,000 people reportedly have died and at least 100,000 people fell ill.

WHO also stated that an oral vaccine campaign would begin in the country with 450,000 people targeted in the worst-affected suburbs of the capital Harare.

Safe water is being trucked to residents, and police have banned the sale of street food, arresting vendors to try to prevent the epidemic from spreading.

In Harare, public gatherings have also been banned and people discouraged from shaking hands.
