It Is Time For The Youth To Go Out and Take Action

Are you tired of the abuse towards your nation? Are you frustrated at the lack of concern and care for your welfare? Are you hurting at the minimal value for life? Are you simply fed up at the consistent dilapidation of Nigeria and disappointed at being called lazy? By now, I’m sure that you have also realised how ineffective complaining is, when there’s no action behind it. But at the same time, you may not know how to become an active citizen and participate in a mission to lift Nigeria from its darkness. Our National Anthem states that “the labour of our heroes past shall never be in vain” – the bad news is that we have witnessed the wreckage of our heroes past for far too long, but the good news is that there is definitely a way forward, and that way is us.

With 110 million of us aged thirty-five and under, we are undoubtedly Nigeria’s most powerful group of citizens. Yet for far too long, we have been excluded from our political scene based on a limit number of political elites that have unfortunately barricaded the polity over the years. Several groups of citizens have suffered this exclusion, but the youth have the power to deconstruct the current structure and enact a progressive change. This is not because we may know it all, but because we have the strength in numbers and power has never been handed to anyone, power has always been taken.

Youth Taking Custody is a social movement aiming to form a mass coalition of youths across Nigeria leading up to the 2019 Elections. The movement is wholly focused on civic engagement and intends to encourage more youths to participate in Nigeria’s politics through several activities and the distribution of information, using both social media and physical interactions to work towards this. Essentially, Youth Taking Custody aims to send a clear message to Nigeria’s largest population bracket and that message is that every single one of us has a voice and we have a choice on how we want to use that voice. Do you want to become overwhelmed by your own complaints or do you want to rise to the case and contribute to Nigeria’s development through consistent engagement? The latter is the focus of Youth Taking Custody and we intend on providing young Nigerians with the right tools to equip them for a civically engaged lifestyle.

Our first goal, asides the distribution of information is to ensure that as many Nigerian youths register for their PVCs before the mid-August deadline. More information will be released shortly with regards to an upcoming mass registration project, however if you’re based in Lagos, here’s a list of all the centres that you can register at:

We have a duty to our nation, to revamp and rebuild her, to treat her with love and to protect her. We are the only group of citizens with the capability to do so, mostly based on our large population and we cannot afford to turn a blind eye to the fragile state of our nation. Join us and become a part of a more progressive Nigeria today. Every single one of us has a major role to play, that includes you.
