The Netflix-Nollywood relationship is blossoming to sweeter levels. According to Variety, the streaming platform is currently developing two original Nigerian series. The major players involved in both projects are tightlipped so details are scarce, but we know they are massive projects that will put Nollywood, its storytelling and its stars on a global map.

The news is hardly surprising given Netflix’s desire to increase its appeal in Africa. The streaming platform has already commissioned two South African series, Queen Sono and Blood and Series, and a Zambian animation series, Mama K’s Team 4. Given the popularity and potential of Nollywood, Nigeria was always going to be next.

Since last year, Netflix has acquired over 40 Nollywood titles, including blockbuster hits like King of Boys, Merry Men 1 and Isoken, and high-production series like Castle $ Castle.

The original projects will be a game-changer in the Netflix-Nollywood burgeoning relationship.
