It’s official, Ryan Coogler is returning to Wakanda. The prolific writer and director behind the mega-hit Black Panther has signed a deal to write and direct the film’s sequel.

Black Panther blew away box office records earlier this year, making $1.3 billion worldwide, including $700 million domestically — the biggest U.S. box office gross for any Marvel film. The movie is also expected to be in awards contention, as is Coogler for directing. Awards pundits anticipate a best picture nomination for the fantasy pic.

It’s now been confirmed that the filmmaker “quietly” closed a deal some time ago, and is expected to begin writing the movie next year with plans to begin production in late 2019 or 2020.

Of course, Chadwick Boseman is expected to return in the titular role, alongside others in the A-list ensemble.
