When Davido signed Mayorkun and Dremo in 2016, it was a sharp departure from the way he had done things in the past. He’d dominantly surrounded himself with acts who were family but he took a chance on an act he found off Twitter and some could argue it’s one of the smartest decisions he’s made yet particularly for DMW, the label he was just launching. In the two and a half years since then, Mayorkun has run his own race and proven himself to be far more than a one-hit wonder and while early, looks to be putting himself in conversations for who could wave the banner of afrobeat music when Davido and Wizkid perhaps take the back seat.

In December 2017, he hosted his first concert at Hard Rock Cafe in Lagos but in the eight months that have followed, he has done more than many could have predicted. Going on successful UK and American tours, Mayorkun turned his sights back to the home turf for the latter half of they year. Kicking off with an Ibadan show on the 21st, the Mayor of Lagos may be beyond the nickname as he held down a 13,000 person crowd with help from label mates and affiliated acts Davido, Dremo, Yonda, Ichaba and Idowest as well as peers like LAX, Slimcase, Small Doctor and DJs like Crowd Kontroller, Baby Boi and Kaywise.

Considering it was a free show, the audience pulled sounds fair but surprised everyone from Mayorkun and his team to many concert-goers. The first step has been put in play, Abuja and Lagos, you’re next.
