Nigerian elections should be postponed to allow voters card distribution.

Sumbo Dasuki, one of Nigeria’s national security advisers has urged the Independent National Electoral Commission to postpone the elections.

The elections, scheduled for 14 February, are the first in Nigeria to require voters to have biometric cards.

The measure was introduced to guard against electoral fraud.

Dasuki believes that the elections should not hold in February to allow INEC time to distribute some 30 million more voters cards.

Dasuki claims he has urged Attahiru Jega to move the elections seeing as there are over three months in which it is still legitimate to hold the elections.

“If in one year you’ve distributed 30 million, I don’t see how you will distribute another 30 million in two weeks. It doesn’t make sense.” said Dasuki.

Inec spokesman Kayode Idowu on the other hand has said there are no plans for the elections to be moved.

Lai Mohammed, an APC spokesperson has also opposed the postponement of the election claiming that there is no reason for INEC not to be ready.

Since Nigeria embraced Democracy in 1999 this has definitely been the closest presidential election race.
