Reactions Over Abuja-based Chinese Supermarket Where Nigerians Are Prohibited

Nigerians have taken to social media to express  their shock and discontent following the discovery of a Chinese supermarket in Abuja, where Nigerians are not allowed to  access.

The supermarket, situated at the China General Chamber of Commerce along Airport Road, sells Chinese foods and beverages.

A bewildered Abuja resident published a  viral video detailing how he was refused  entry into the supermarket premises and was informed that  it was out of bounds to Nigerians.

He said: “There is this Chinese restaurant I saw online. They have food, ramen and other things. So, I wanted to check it out and when I got there the security guard told me the supermarket was strictly for Chinese people. If you are a Nigerian, you can’t go in and can’t buy anything.”

“This supermarket is here in Abuja, Nigeria, and Nigerians cannot enter. This is a joke. This means a Chinese national has more rights in Nigeria than a Nigerian because they can enter anywhere they want.”

A group of Nigerian youth visited the supermarket on Monday to confirm the claims, and  in another viral video documenting their experience, they questioned  the Nigerian security guard at the entry point about how long Nigerians had been debarred from the premises.

The anonymous guard responded that the management issued the directive in January this year, but he could not provide a reason for the prohibition.

Following reports of the situation, the Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) have sealed the Chinese supermarket and summoned the owners of the supermarket to appear before the Commission on Wednesday April 24, 2024.
