With the upcoming release of Netflix Original Siempre Bruja, there’s a new teen witch on the roster, and she’s a time-traveling Afro-Latina.
Back in October, Netflix shook the internet revealing a new drama series featuring a badass Afro-Colombian bruja. Now, with a little less than a month away from its premiere, we can learn what’s about to go down in Netflix’s original series Siempre Bruja (Always a Witch).
Siempre Bruja, a Netflix Original Series, follows Carmen (Angely Gaviria), an Afro-Colombian witch that got unstuck from time when she was about to be burned at the stake. Now stuck in the modern day, she has to learn how to navigate magic and modernity.
The show will explore the deep history of the persecution of Black witches. In fact, the city of Cartagena was one of the seats of the Holy Office of the Spanish Inquisition, where men and women, namely African slaves, were tortured in the name of rooting out witchcraft.
Based on a book, it looks sharp, and might be a compelling watch for viewers disappointed about the way Chilling Adventures of Sabrina has treated its women of color.
