South African legend, Yvonne Chaka Chaka is being honoured with the 2017 BET International Global Good Star and Power award. The award is endowed on individuals who have championed impactful change and heightened awareness in different parts of the world while leveraging their platforms to bring visibility and provide a voice to the under-served and under-represented.

Chaka Chaka whose musical output has slowed down now focuses on advocacy and humanitarian work. She has committed time to the fight against AIDS, Malaria and Tuberculosis and established the Princess of Africa Foundation to push for observance of rights of women and protection of children.

With the award, Chaka Chaka joins the likes of Akon and Millen Magese on the list of those who have taken the award home. When interviewed on the honor, Chaka explained her joy at the honour but expressed shock as she never expected it. She said “I love BET, I watch their channels but I always thought it was more for the young people. So when I was told that I am nominated, I was deeply humbled because they are recognizing me for respecting my talent and the responsibility it comes with it.”

With this award, Chaka adds to her achievements which already boasts the World Economic Forum’s Crystal Award from 2013.
