Beyond his musical pursuits, Udeigwe holds the position of Associate Professor of Mathematics at Manhattan College in New York, as well as Research Faculty and 21/22 MLK Visiting Associate Professor in Brain & Cognitive Sciences at MIT. His innovative approach to music, informed by mathematical principles, distinguishes him as a trailblazer in a sea of conformity within today’s music landscape.
Notably, Udeigwe is a self-taught producer with a deep understanding of jazz theory, acquired through his efforts. Forming his inaugural band in Pittsburgh in 2007, he released his debut album Highlife, Soul, and Ecstasy in 2008, followed by his sophomore release My House in 2013, marking his official entry into the Nigerian music scene. Udeigwe’s musical evolution continues to captivate listeners with each successive album, showcasing his dynamic range and boundary-pushing creativity. His third album, Naija Rhythm Affair, NYC, unveiled in 2016, earned accolades from AllAboutJazz for its innovative fusion of original jazz compositions within a progressive cosmopolitan framework, infused with unmistakable West African influences.
Following this, Udeigwe returned with his fourth offering, Rhythm Sustained, in 2018, featuring a dozen mesmerizing tracks, including the standout Today. This soulful anthem, which resonates with timeless relevance, saw a resurgence when Udeigwe released a remixed version in April 2023.
Delving into the genesis of Today, Udeigwe reveals a remarkable journey that began in 2008 amidst the historic election of Barack Obama. It wasn’t until 2014 that he brought the song to life, a testament to the meticulous craftsmanship and profound storytelling that define his artistry. Udeigwe’s ability to weave personal and societal narratives into his music underscores his status as a visionary artist pushing the boundaries of sonic expression.
