This is how “4C” kicks off: as an ode to self-acceptance and empowerment courtesy of SHAVONE.
Not even five seconds into SHAVONE’S new video for her song “4C” (a reference to a texture type of natural hair) and you are met with a variety of blooming Afros, braids, twists, and other natural hairstyles.
In an industry filled with pullovers, cargo pants and polo shirts the multi-hyphenate creative — the first Black woman in many of her roles in tech — has made a name for herself sporting double Nike socks, bamboo earrings and a daring hand of acrylic nails. Her unconventional style has already branded her as one of the most memorable women in tech, holding positions at Google, Twitter, Facebook, and most recently as the Head of Global Music & Youth Culture communications at Instagram.
The video, directed by Magic In Her Melanin creative director Curtis Taylor Jr., the video features 25 of today’s most-influential next-gen voices in fashion, beauty, activism and art with special nods to Nigerian dancer Nestraya; Instagram beauty star Nnenna B.; Mental health activist and Sad Girls Club founder Elyse Fox; body positivity activist and makeup artist Raisa; the Art Hoe Collective’s Gabrielle Richardson; Muslim activist and Equality For Her founder Blair Imani,and beauty activist Susy Oludele (of Solange and Beyoncé hair braid fame) and others..
