“Fuji: A Opera” marked a major milestone this year as Fuji Vibrations 2025 delivered its most expansive edition yet, transforming Muri Okunola Park into a vibrant, full-capacity celebration of heritage, community, and the enduring power of Fuji music. Held on December 4, the fifth-anniversary edition drew an impressive 8,421 attendees, reaffirming the event’s reputation as the foremost annual gathering for Fuji culture and its growing global audience.
This year’s theme, THIS IS FUJI, served as both an announcement and an affirmation. Rather than focusing solely on Fuji as it exists today, the evening traced the genre back to its earliest spiritual and cultural roots. Performances opened with tributes to the foundational sounds that shaped Fuji’s evolution — Ajiwere, Ajisari, Sakara, Apala, and Waka music — creating a rare opportunity for the audience to experience the music’s full lineage in one setting. Queen Amudalat Aweni Oniwaka set the tone with a heartfelt exploration of Waka’s melodic strength, honouring the women whose artistry helped define Fuji’s early structure. Imole Anabi guided the crowd through the contemplative chants of Ajiwere and Ajisari, while Rasheed Apala and Abideen Yusuff Olatunji (Baba Legba) brought the rhythmic intricacy of Apala and Sakara to life. Saheed Akanmu (Saridon Possible) bridged the evening’s historical reflection with the expressive energy of contemporary Fuji, completing a journey that reminded everyone that Fuji emerged from a rich and sophisticated ecosystem of Yoruba music traditions.
Once the foundation had been honoured, the night surged into a new gear with the arrival of Fuji’s biggest stars. King Saheed Osupa, Atawewe, Obesere, Shanko Rasheed, Taye Currency, SK Sensation, KS1 Malaika, and King Wasiu Ayinde Marshall delivered powerful, deeply expressive performances that reaffirmed the genre’s influence and enduring relevance. Each legend brought their signature energy to the stage — Malaika’s polished modernity, Osupa’s intellectual depth, Obesere’s fearless unpredictability, Atawewe’s intensity, Currency’s grounded presence, and KWAM 1’s unmatched authority — creating a dynamic, emotionally charged experience that felt both historic and boldly forward-looking.
The success of Fuji Vibrations 2025 was strengthened by the continued support of its stakeholders, including Diageo, Goldberg Lager Beer, Supa Komando, and Zuri Seasoning, alongside the essential contributions of the Lagos State Government, LASPARK, LASAA, the Lagos State Security Trust Fund, Mezovest, Eclipse Live, and Events By Claud. Fuji: A Opera also deepened its long-standing collaboration with FUMAN, led by Alhaji Sikiru Agboola (Kolotiti), reinforcing the unity and collective purpose at the heart of the Fuji community.
From the reverent exploration of Fuji’s origins to the electrifying performances from its leading voices, Fuji Vibrations 2025 succeeded not just as a concert but as a cultural reaffirmation; an evening that honoured identity, pride, and continuity. As the crowd dispersed and the final echoes of percussion faded into the night, one message remained clear: Fuji’s legacy is secure, its community is unwavering, and its future continues to shine even brighter.
