An Abuja Protest Was Banned Because Someone Thought It Constitutes A Nuisance

The Abuja police commissioner, Sadiq Bello, has declared that protest at the Unity Fountain, Abuja constitutes public nuisance and therefore placed an indefinite ban on such activities by pro-democracy and good governance advocates across Abuja.

Bello said of the pro-democracy advocates and others, “all of them are in the same category, they’re disrupting people’s activities and infringing on their human rights by blocking the roads and other things,” declaring that “they’re constituting a nuisance.”

The ban was on the heels of the arrest and later release of activist, Deji Adeyanju who was arrested while leading protest for the release of the leader of Shi’te Muslim group in Nigeria, Ibrahim El-Zakzaky.

Mr. El-Zakzaky has been in detention for two years even while the court has ordered his release.
