It’s not often we witness collaborations between a-listers in the Nigerian music industry. The last collaboration of this magnitude was a Don Jazzy feature on Burna Boy’s Question which was underappreciated. This week, Adekunle Gold and Davido move to right the balance and tip the scales in their favor on the former’s latest, High, a song on which he peaks in all the new little facets he’s been debuting for the past two years.
Produced by frequent collaborator, Pheelz, High takes a bit of the new grounds Adekunle Gold has been breaking since before his third studio album, Afropop Vol. 1 was released, including an affinity for EDM tinged music, racier narratives, a more confident and charismatic persona and in general, a desire to explore uncharted waters at every turn. High explores a never before heard soundscape, with an interpolation of resonant EDM influenced percussions in a broad bass base inspired by South Africa’s now-famous Amapiano sound.
Largely different, in personalities and influences, Adekunle Gold and Davido still manage to unite in a fascinating and laudable way in their promotion of wealth-backed romance. It’s 2021 and people need to be cast in favorable dimensions like the glittery one the duo creates on High.
