African fiction has never been short on women who refuse to be simple. They lie, scheme, endure, break, and rebuild themselves in ways that this list cannot do justice to, and that’s exactly why they stay with us. These are fifteen characters who got under our skin. Some for their quiet courage, others for their contradictions, and a few because we recognised pieces of ourselves, or someone we know and love, in them. This is not a ranking of the “best” women in African literature, it is a biased list of the ones we have kept thinking about long after we closed the books.

Oriire Kidnapping Sentencing Raises More Questions

On July 23, 2026, a Federal High Court judge in Abuja sentenced three men to life in prison over the mass abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oriire Local Government Area, Oyo State. Justice Salim Ibrahim handed down the sentence after Abdulrazak Umar (also known as Abu Khalifa or Abu Khalid), Yunusa Musa (also known as Yunusa bin Musa) and Shamsu Adamu Sani (also known as Abu Itisar) pleaded guilty to some of the charges against them. The sentence takes effect from the date of their arrest.
