The Benue State Government has confirmed the discovery of significant gold and aluminium deposits across key parts of the state, a development officials say could transform its economy and strengthen its role within Nigeria’s growing solid minerals sector.
The Director of Solid Minerals in Benue State, Anselm Nege, announced that gold deposits have been confirmed in Kwande Local Government Area, while aluminium deposits have been identified along riverine areas of the state.
“On gold and other mineral discoveries, there have been confirmed reports of gold deposits in Kwande Local Government Area and aluminium deposits along riverine areas of the state,” Nege said.
He explained that while mining activities are already underway in some of these areas, many operations remain unorganised or illegal, posing both economic and environmental risks. The state government, he added, is closely monitoring these activities to ensure proper regulation and sustainable extraction practices.
“Mining activities in these areas are ongoing, but many remain unorganised and, in some cases, illegal. We are monitoring these activities to ensure proper regulation and to mitigate economic and environmental risks,” Nege stated.
Also speaking, the Chief Risk Officer of Benue Investment and Property Company Ltd (BIPC), Andrew Simon Mbaiorga, emphasised that with the right framework, these discoveries could evolve into a sustainable and profitable venture for the state.
“If this is done properly, in a constructive way, and with the right investors on the ground, this can become a strong, sustainable initiative and eventually lead to formal commercial rights and recognition,” Mbaiorga said.
He noted that the Benue State Government has established a regulatory board to oversee and coordinate mining activities, particularly among indigenous miners, as part of efforts to attract credible investors and ensure responsible exploitation of the newly discovered resources.
“Our goal is to encourage investors in this area to collaborate with us — to form partnerships, establish industries, and develop the sector,” he added.
The discoveries position Benue as a potential emerging hub in Nigeria’s solid minerals landscape, at a time when both state and federal governments are seeking to diversify revenue sources beyond oil. With effective governance, investment, and environmental stewardship, officials say these mineral finds could redefine Benue’s economic trajectory for years to come.
