Abu Musab al-Barnawi, new Boko Haram leader

Today has seen the Islamic State announce that a new leader of Boko Haram has emerged. Going forward, the terror group shall be led by Abu Musab al-Barnawi who previously served as the spokesman for the terrorists.

The announcement was made via the latest issue of an IS magazine, BBC reports.

There is little talk of former leader, Abubakar Shekau who was last heard of via an audio message last August which was later supplemented by an IS video this April stating that he was still alive.

In the interview in IS’s weekly Arabic magazine al-Naba, Mr Barnawi said his group “remained a force to be reckoned with” and said it had been drawing new recruits.

He described the group’s battle against West African states as a war fought by Muslims against “apostates” and “crusaders”.

What does al-Barnawi taking over control mean for the terrorists who have lost ground massively in the past 18 months?
