Bolg promises the world to a prospective lover on Jejely

Bolg is making music for a new generation pining for music from their not-too-distant-past. As we head towards a recalibration of the popular Nigerian sound, a number of young musicians are taking exciting risks with their music: experimenting with strands of sonic identities from previous decades and creating familiar music rooted in fragments of these reanimated influences.

There are shades of that re-invention in the latest release of singer-songwriter, Bolg. Titled Jejely, the song pays homage to the courting stage of a relationship as Bolg makes grandiose promises to his prospective lover. His sappy promises, detailed with unflinching clarity, are delivered over fervent Afrobeat-lite-like beats – note the lack of an s. And his deadpan delivery balances magnificently over the well-woven instrumentals that dot the background.
