Chimzy and Psycho YP Turn The Clock Back On Weird-MC Inspired ‘Ijoya’

Conversations about sampling have become commonplace in discourse about music. To some, it represents a display of a lack of creativity, for others it’s paying homage to the greats and repurposing their music for today’s audience. As Chimzy teams up with Psycho YP for the second time, following up on Days from 2019, they’re remodeling Weird MC’s most popular track Ijoya for modern-day afropop.
On their recreation, Chimzy delivers a pair of new verses and strips the iconic hook down to the basics. With the track’s opening verse, Chimzy introduces the subject matter, a woman who’s attention he’s trying to attract. When Psycho YP slides in, he brings the listeners into his frame of mind, one where he has decided to prioritize growing wealth and putting on for his team.
