CJ Obasi Dives into Animation with “Juju Soccer”

From the visionary behind Ojuju, Juju Stories, and the black-and-white mythic marvel Mami Wata, award-winning filmmaker CJ “Fiery” Obasi has announced his first foray into animation, and in true Obasi fashion, it’s drenched in juju.

Taking to Twitter yesterday with the succinct tease, “Animation debut incoming,” Obasi unveiled Juju Soccer, a supernatural sports fantasy that fuses street football with African mysticism in a way only he can. A short teaser has already surfaced, introducing two central characters who appear poised to anchor this action-heavy series.

The project is being produced by longtime collaborators Somto Ajuluchukwu and Oge Obasi, signaling a continuity of the creative synergy that powered Obasi’s past genre-defying films.

While the continent has previously witnessed animated sports stories like Supa Strikas, a beloved Pan-African series that brought football to comic book pages and TV screens,  Juju Soccer is something entirely different. Where Supa Strikas flirted with exaggerated reality, Juju Soccer promises a full embrace of the mystical, injecting real African spiritual systems into the pulse of a game that unites the continent.

At a time when global streaming platforms are hungry for distinctive animated content, Juju Soccer functions as both an artistic revolution and cultural restoration. For Obasi, whose cinematic universe has consistently mined African folklore and elevated it into modern myth, this series could mark a turning point for African animation and genre storytelling at large.
