Grey, the Y Combinator-backed cross-border payments platform, brought together users, team members, and partners from across Africa, Asia, Latin America, Europe, and North America on November 22 in Lagos to celebrate five years of transforming how people earn, spend, and access global opportunities.

What began as a simple mission to make international payments easier has grown into a product offering instant international transfers, currency conversion, local payouts, and multi-currency accounts, that enable millions to live and work across borders.
The choice of Lagos forthe milestone celebration was significant. It’s where Grey’s founders first met and where much of the company’s story began. The anniversary event doubled as both a team offsite and a reunion for the community that has formed around the platform.
Since launching in 2020, Grey has grown to serve more than 2.3+ million users across 70+ countries, processing payments to over 170 countries. The platform has become essential for remote workers receiving salaries in foreign currencies, freelancers collaborating across continents, digital nomads moving between cities, and businesses engaging international partners, particularly in emerging markets where traditional banking creates barriers.

Reflecting on the milestone, Idorenyin Obong, CEO of Grey, said, “Grey was built to make global earning and spending feel effortless. Today, it has become a significant part of a lifestyle that empowers people to pursue international opportunities and live without boundaries. Celebrating five years in Lagos, where this journey began, reminds us how far we’ve come and what lies ahead. We will continue building experiences, features, and partnerships that give our users the freedom, flexibility, and confidence to build the lives they envision.”
The evening captured Grey’s evolution from fintech startup to community-driven brand. Users shared stories of how Grey enabled their cross-border lifestyles, from receiving payments without hidden fees to managing multi-currency expenses seamlessly. In a moment that embodied the company’s culture, Grey’s COO and co-founder Joseph Femi Aghedo stepped into the DJ booth, turning the celebration into an expression of the company’s connection to the people it serves.
Grey remains focused on providing secure, seamless multi-currency solutions for individuals and businesses. The company holds Money Service Business licenses from FINTRAC in Canada and FinCEN in the USA, with a clear focus on serving emerging markets through access to global accounts, international payments, currency exchange, and virtual card services.
