A fusion of two music cultures and sounds takes effect as Nigeria’s Afrobeats superstar Davido gets featured on the remix of Jamaican artist Teejay’s Drift. Noticeable in this song are sultry Afro-Caribbean rhythms which pulsate as Teejay’s unmistakeable cadence heralds the momentum after which the Jamaican artist passes on the energy to the Unavailable crooner, Davido.

As an attempt to bridge the gap between West Africa and the Caribbean, this remix features a universal sound that is not genre-restricted. Teejay and Davido connect their unique melodies and styled, which includes vocal styling rendered in a mix of English, Jamaican Patois and Yoruba, all in what feels like a singular formidable language. The accompanying visuals are notably  shot in Nigeria, its action featuring private planes, champagne and cars, while Davido and Teejay remain conspicuous at almost every point.

Teejay is fast establishing himself as one of the most sought after dancehall artists, as his sounds are often endowed with the sleek, high-calibre undertones that define Jamaican soundwaves. Also a talented storyteller, the artist’s flair has been further demonstrated through his collaborations with compatriots and artistic colleagues like Popcaan, Jahmiel and Vybz Kartel, and international superstars such as Giggs, Stefflon Don and Kodak Black. Having pushed his boundaries and positioned himself for global relevance, his eclectic artistry cannot be contested.

Teejay’s hits include the Kodak Black-featured Paper Soldier and Dog Mout in which he features UK icon Giggs. Signed to Warner Music ahead of his I Am Chippy EP, TeeJay’s tremendous rise up the music ranks is a testament of his consistency and painstaking evolution. Now pairing up with a critically acclaimed artist like Davido, it feels all too wonderful for the artist.

Davido’s appearance on Drift is coming against the backdrop of his recent and long-awaited Grammy recognition. The Afrobeats icon received three nominations for the 2024 Grammy Awards, which are Best Global Album for his latest album Timeless, Best African Performance for his song Unavailable, and Best Global Music Performance for his song Feel. With this collaborative effort, both singers will be closing off the year on a grand note as worthy ambassadors of their respective nations.
