Davido got signed to Sony Music earlier in the year, Ayo Jay followed quickly and now Wizkid too has gotten a big deal from the record label.
Davido has taken 9 months off without releasing any music, however, his EP, Son Of Mercy is set to go live tomorrow. Wizkid saw himself occupy the number 1 position on the Billboard charts for his feature on Drake’s One Dance while AyoJay has seen his single, Your Number gain widespread acceptance for him in the US.
Osagie Alonge looks into the impact of Wizkid and Davido veering off the Nigerian music scene and pushing for more acceptance in the US and Europe. He argues that with artists like Tekno on the come-up in Nigeria, Sony’s recent signees put themselves in a difficult situation but still have their power if their music remains the kind of music that has gotten them where they are today.
