Some weeks ago, Fireboy DML, YBNL and EMPIRE hosted American rapper and Fireboy’s musical collaborator, D Smoke in Lagos to much media frenzy. The former has decided to make the experience into a YouTube documentary which he published via his channel.
In the seven-minute long clip, it isn’t hard to tell that the visit was not only an eye-opener to the richness of the Lagos youth culture, but also an avenue for the rapper to connect to a wider fan base through media appearances and a visit to the Kalakuta Shrine, a musical mecca for tourists seeking to understand the roots of Afrobeat. The rapper is also seen in the studio with the likes of Phyno, Reminisce, Cheque and Falz, an indicator that would he visit wasn’t strictly for leisure but an endeavor to advance his career in the most populous black nation on earth,an ideal market for Hip-Hop.
Speaking of the trip, D Smoke mentioned that one of the reasons why he decided to visit Lagos was to enable him connect with Fireboy whom he shares a hit song, ‘Champion’ with. Having never met, he felt the visit offered an opportunity to build a bond.
