Gdzilla Relives Street Experiences In “OT”

Olamide’s debut album, Rapsodi, set the stage for artists crafting music steeped in street realism. Declaring himself the “Voice of the Streets,” the Bariga-born star dedicated his come-up to making music for the people in the streets, paying homage to them, and the experiences that shaped him.

Over a decade later, young artists like Seyi Vibez, Balloranking, and Bella Shmurda have taken up the mantle. The latest in this lineage is Jonzing World’s Gdzilla, as he shows in his new single, OT.

In OT, which is short for “orientation,” Gdzilla shares street wisdom drawn from his experiences growing up in Ikorodu, Lagos. Singing in his native Yoruba, he delivers motivational lyrics: “Omo iya mi ma sun, Tori aiye yi gan dun, Fi omi ko bo ju, Aiye ti mo wa igbadun.” These lines encourage listeners to keep grinding, as there is a joy to be found in life. OT is deeply personal to Gdzilla, reflecting his lived experiences in the outskirts of Lagos and blending elements from Yoruba indigenous music and street-hop rhythms.
