The Independent National Electoral Commission has approved the resumption of political campaigns.
The approval was contained in a statement by INEC’s National Commissioner and Chairman of the commission’s Information and Voter Education Committee, Mr Festus Okoye.
Following the postponement of the presidential and national assembly elections by a week last Saturday, INEC chairman, Professor Yakubu Mahmood had said campaigns remained suspended.
But political parties disagreed with the INEC boss, relying on the Electoral Act which stipulates a suspension of political campaigns 24 hrs before poll.
The decision was vehemently questioned by both the All Progressives Congress and the Peoples Democratic Party who separately insisted that they would resume campaigns before the rescheduled polls take place.
In a statement yesterday, INEC said it opted to reopen the campaigns after consultations with political parties.
The campaigns are expected to end “by midnight of Thursday, 21st February 2019”.
