Every year, during Christmas, Nollywood engages her audience with cinema projects to match the aura and celebration of the season. In the past, we have had both Christmas-themed productions such as Kunle Afolayan’s A Naija Christmas (2021) and Christmas In Miami (2021) non-Christmas-themed productions such as Funke Akindele’s Battle On Buka Street (2022) and A Tribe Called Judah (2023) spicing up the end-of-the-year season. Jadesola Osiberu is set to provide an even more exhilarating experience as her romcom Christmas In Lagos premieres on Prime Video this December holiday.
Christmas In Lagos follows the affairs of multiple characters as they navigate relationships, love, and self-discovery during the feature season. The romantic getaway involves Fiyin (Tunde Aladese) who, getting over a heartbreak, believes her best friend Elo (Shalom Obiago) might be her life partner—but things become complicated when Elo returns from abroad with the intention to engage with his secret girlfriend, Yagazie (Angel Anosike).
Elsewhere, 59-year-old Gbemi has to make a tough choice between her longtime boyfriend (Wale Ojo) and her high school sweetheart (Richard Mofe-Damijo). Then, there’s Ivie (Rayxia Ojo) who returns to Lagos from London in hope of a fun-filled December experience only to be swept off her feet by Ajani (Ladipoe). The cast contains an ensemble of veterans and new actors, and includes some of the biggest names in Afrobeats such as Adekunle Gold, Ayra Starr, Ladipoe and Waje. Rising artists like Liya and Wurld make cameos in the film, while the soundtrack includes songs from Afrobeats icons D’banj and Flavour, and juju legend King Sunny Ade.
In a media conversation, Jade Osiberu connects the story with the Nigerian phenomenon of “Detty December”,a period when the country’s most colourful cty entertains a month-long atmosphere of peak celebrations. “There’s a lot of family togetherness during Christmas, but a majority of it is around a culture of having these big parties and concerts and weddings,” she said.
Through her production company Greoh Studios, Osiberu has been responsible for bos office successes like Isoken (2017) and Sugar Rush (2019). Her cinematic output also includes Loukman Alli-directed crime thriller Brotherhood (2022) and Africa’s first Amazon Prime Video Original Gangs of Lagos (2023).
Christmas In Lagos will debut on Prime Video on December 20th, 2024.
