Last week, a quote credited to Wizkid triggered the now annual discourse around the state of Nigerian rap. In the time since then, the conversation has evolved into a larger one around the viability of Nigerian rap JoulesDaKid unwittingly offers a response with the drill-heavy return with Problem Child. Joules’ bonafides are well known. Following the success of RRS, in 2018 he featured as a guest artist on M.I. Abaga’s Rendezvous. He followed that up with Pressure & Balance, two singles off his 2019 project, JDK’19. He has since carved a niche for himself in drill music, combining it with his original fluency.
Problem Child features heavy kick pattern drill music with a blend of JDK’s slogan and delivery. The song describes his past releases, like BADDA, and also breaks down the reality of how his reality changed after the transition phase.
