Letters To Buhari: David Amos

Posted on

Dear President Buhari,

Congratulations on your victory at the polls. The mandate that the Nigerian people have given you for the next four years is herculean- it is daunting and virtually impossible. If one is to go by the plethora of failed potential and shattered promises that have characterized regime after regime of Nigerian Heads of States and Presidents, one would be forced to conclude that no difference will be made after your mandate is over in 2019 or 2023 as fate permits.

However, there is something in the air, in Lagos and in Daura, Katsina. There is a palpable sense of belief coursing through the Nigerian consciousness; through the veins of the inhabitants of the mountain plains of Idanre land in Ondo State to the residents in shattered bushels in the IDP camp in Yola even after just being hit by another ugly attack.

Mr President, the task ahead of you is no small task, but you have the support of the Nigerian people. You must realize that the mantra of change that you so boldly sold to the Nigerian people has been readily bought and remains the sole currency of our contract with you. We expect the recent upsurge in the supply of power to remain and continue to improve. We expect Boko Haram to be annihilated and order restored to the communities in the North East so that they can rebuild after years of being under the scourge of senseless extremism. We expect the Niger Delta to be rehabilitated, with environmental restoration top of your government’s agenda for that region. We expect a fair and balanced government, one that reflects the true diversity of our rich and boisterous nation and we expect the assurance of the equitable enactment of the rule of law.

Anything short of these tangible results Mr President, would mean that you have failed us. It would mean your message of change was fraudulent. It would mean you entered into an agreement with Nigeria in bad faith. It would mean that just like in countless regimes and administrations before yours, we were again, lied to. It would mean that you are not the man of integrity and character that you say you are.

Dear Mr President, we expect you to deliver on your promises. Whether directly uttered by you or suggested by your party, if change is indeed here, then we expect to see it.

Yours in Citizenship,

David Amos.
