The era of first ladies is gradually coming to an end as women in the music industry are coming into their own, but for Liya, the newest signee to Davido’s DMW Records, honor is due as she is headed for domination in not only a male-driven label but the industry at large. This mixture of talent, passion, and resilience is evident in her DMW debut, Melo.
Rather than experiment and bank on Afropop’s synth percussions as is the norm for her labelmates especially, Liya steps back and instead wields her mesmeric vocals as her primary tool of expression and fascination, sounding as elemental and graceful as ever on Melo.
Despite its focus on love, Liya manages to spin Melo into a self-appraisal piece. Through her presentation to her muse, she makes aware, her capabilities, tooting her horn by way of metaphors. The single comes with a regal video that speaks to this fact.
