Olma Records’ Muyiwa Akhigbe hops on the train of artists using their sounds to touch on vices in our society with his new record, Owner. Alternatively, he does not lean towards afropop instrumentals to pass his message across but takes a more tranquil route. According to the him, “I’m addressing a societal challenge with this song. When you listen to the song, you will find out that the society we live in is faced with numerous challenges from peer pressure to suicide to battles with self esteem. There are different ways to interpret it.”
He interprets this by creating a cocoon of almost mournful vocals, ominous keys and soulful lyrics part of which are lent from Yoruba parables. Calmly drawing us into the well of misfortune a lot of people are drowning in, Muyiwa hopes to have us understand what it feels like to ‘live fast and die young’.
