In their commitment to fostering the next generation of African basketball stars, NBA Africa has awarded prestigious scholarships to two talented Nigerian athletes, Samson Mashebinu and Lewis Uvwo. The coveted scholarships grant the young players entry into the renowned NBA Academy in Senegal, where they will have the opportunity to hone their skills, elevate their game, and pave the way for their dreams of making it big in the world of professional basketball.
“This is a momentous occasion, not just for Samson and Lewis, but for the entire Nigerian basketball community,” says Gbemisola Abudu, NBA Africa Vice President and Country Head Nigeria. “These scholarships represent the tangible impact of NBA Africa’s commitment to unlocking the immense potential of our young athletes.”
The scholarships were awarded following a highly competitive elite camp held in July 2024. Through these camps, the organization provides aspiring players with access to professional-level guidance, mentorship, and pathways to achieve their aspirations.
“The NBA Academy offers an unparalleled environment for our young athletes to thrive,” Abudu continues. “Samson and Lewis will have the opportunity to train within an elite system, surround themselves with like-minded peers, and position themselves for future success both on and off the court.”
With the next elite camp just around the corner, NBA Africa remains committed to unlocking even more opportunities for young African talent, thus transforming sports and access to resources and opportunities across Africa.
“This is just the beginning,” Abudu affirms. “NBA Africa will continue to pave the way for our young talents, providing them with the resources, guidance, and platforms they need to thrive. We are excited to witness the incredible journeys that lie ahead for Samson, Lewis, and all the aspiring basketball stars of Africa.”
