Netflix has announced the forthcoming sequel series to EbonyLife’s crime drama thriller, Òlòtūré, which was released in 2019. The sequel titled Òlòtūré: The Journey will debut on the global streaming platform on June 28, 2024.
The series follows an investigative journalist who goes undercover as a sex worker in Nigeria to expose corruption. On her journey, she fights for her life as she forges a path to Europe.
Kenneth Gyang returns as director of the series with Sharon Ooja retaining her role as the titular character, Òlòtūré. The cast also includes Beverly Osu, Daniel Etim Effiong, Omoni Oboli, Stan Nze, Ikechukwu Onunaku, Patrick Doyle, Wofai Fada, Bucci Franklin, Bukola Oladipupo and Amarachukwu Ono.
The 2019 film, Òlòtūré, debuted on Netflix on October 2, 2020 after premiering at Carthage Film Festival in Tunisia on October 31, 2019. Days after its Netflix release, the film ranked among the top 10 most watched films on the platform in the world.
Mo Abudu’s EbonyLife Studios is in a multi-title partnership with Netflix to create two Netflix Original series as well as multiple Netflix branded films and a series licensed to the service. The 2022 series, Blood Sisters, is part of the deal.
The partnership also includes on-screen adaptations of literary works by two critically acclaimed Nigerian writers: a series based on Lola Shoneyin’s The Secret Lives of Baba Segi’s Wives and a film adaptation of Wole Soyinka’s Death and the King’s Horseman. In 2022, EbonyLife released Elesin Oba: The King’s Horseman, adapted from Soyinka’s drama, in partial fulfillment of the deal.
Since establishment in 2014, the Mo Abudu-led EbonyLife Studios has championed the production of several films, including Fifty, The Wedding Party, Chief Daddy, Your Excellency and The Royal Hibiscus Hotel; and television series Sons of The Caliphate and War: Wrath and Revenge.
