The Nigerian Ministry of foreign affairs has confirmed that Nigerian Embassies are currently facing eviction among other financial challenges abroad. In a statement released on Monday, September 1, 2025 the ministry acknowledges the operational difficulties that are being experienced by several diplomatic and consular missions abroad.
In their statement, the ministry explained that budgetary shortfalls over the years, coupled with foreign exchange fluctuations and the convergence of exchange rates under the new monetary policy, have affected the ability of missions to meet their financial obligations, impacting the payment of locally recruited staff, home-based officers’ allowances, and other operational costs.
To address the situation, the Federal Government has approved special intervention funds, with the first batch already remitted to all consulates. Second Semester Allocations have also been approved, and the Ministry is working with the Federal Ministry of Finance and the Central Bank of Nigeria to ensure the prompt release of Personnel and Overhead Cost Allocations. These measures are expected to clear outstanding allowances and improve the financial stability of missions.
The Ministry is also developing a sustainable financial model for funding diplomatic missions abroad, which includes exploring innovative solutions and efficiency measures to ensure operational stability. These efforts are part of broader public sector financial reforms aimed at enhancing fiscal governance and effective resource allocation.
Nigeria’s Foreign Affairs Ministry acknowledged the dedication of diplomatic staff who continue to perform their duties under demanding conditions. It also thanked host governments, service providers, and international partners for their cooperation and understanding.
The Ministry has expressed confidence that the financial challenges faced by Nigerian missions are temporary and will be resolved through ongoing government measures. It reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to effective international diplomacy and the welfare of its citizens and staff abroad.
