Nigeria at 62: Spotify celebrates Independence Day with 3 playlists

The streaming service, Spotify, has curated three playlists in order to celebrate Nigeria’s 62nd Independence Day. The playlists each comprise songs from the Nigerian soundscape: Fuji, Afrobeats of the 2000s and 2010s. They are so named: Sound of Fuji, I love my 2000s Afrobeats, and I love my 2010s Afrobeats.

“Aside from the global growth of Afrobeats, Nigeria is also home to a diverse musical culture, with genres of unique origins, and artists who have created iconic music across eras,” reads a statement by the Swedish company on Friday.

“To highlight this, Spotify is giving a voice to some of Nigerian music’s unsung genres, its most essential decades, as well as the creators and hit songs that laid foundations for Afrobeats success.”

The Fuji playlist contains songs by Kollington Ayinla, Wasiu Alabi Pasuma, Saoti Arewa, Haruna Ishola, among others.

Songs by Bracket, Styl-Plus, Dagrin, P-Square, Lagbaja, to name a few, make up the 2000s Afrobeats playlist.

The third playlist comprises songs by Praiz, Temz, Wande Coal, Timaya, Simi, among others.
