Obasanjo’s Internet – Idunu Aganga-Williams

Posted on

Did you know that there are approximately 4.66 billion active internet users worldwide? Can you imagine all the different ways in which we all use the internet? Obasanjo’s Internet is our interview series where we speak to some of our Internet favourites on how they relate to the Internet and what it means to them and their work.

This week, Idunu Aganga-Williams, founder of Abuja’s Entertainment Community, Ofthebuj talks to us about how she uses Obasanjo’s Internet.

What’s the first thing you do when you wake up?
The first thing I do is actually check my phone. I literally just stretch out to see if maybe Beyonce has recognised me or something.

How do you use the internet for work or pleasure?

Very much for both.

What moment or episode in your life would you say captured the essence of the internet?

On Instagram, it’s literally just the fact that you can get lost in it. When you’re just watching one video and you end up watching a hundred videos. I like that you can easily just laugh away your problems. For Twitter, I feel like the community vibe of it is really my highlight of having internet in the world.

Your favourite social media platform and why?

It’s Twitter because of the sense of community, even if it’s three people you always talk to on the TL, or your one friend who is always liking and retweeting your business tweets. I really love Twitter. It’s such an integral part of my life, I cannot even pretend like it’s not. I really really love that app. Shoutout to Jack for doing this.

What was the last meme you saved?

Do you remember the first time something you posted went viral? What was it? How did it make you feel?

It was either in 2018 or 2019. I don’t know if I can be explicit about what happened but it was basically some random person who came on my curious cat and was trying to slut shame me or call me out for something I did not do, and I gave him a badass response that went viral. It was so funny. The person must have been boiling in annoyance, they thought they could drag me but God did not allow them. E sweet me die!

What’s the most outrage you have ever generated over something you posted? How did you react to it?

I don’t think I’ve ever said anything that people don’t like, but I think the one time was the conspiracy theory I came up with, and everybody was like ‘girl you need to shut up’. I was just like you guys think! Think about it! You’ll see the answer.

What rules do you live by on the internet?
I said it, I twote it, I meant it or something like that. But my favourite quote for the internet is “when you’re big, you’re big but when you’re large, you’re in charge.”

What is your guiltiest online pleasure?

Obasanjo’s internet please now! Okay, there’s this page where they make pastries and the guy paints out the food to look hyper-realistic, so sometimes I sit down and just watch it. I’ve been to the bottom of his page before and his page was made in 2017.

Would you say you have an online persona?
I think I’m pretty much the same in real life and on Twitter. Things I can say out loud, I tweet them and things I can tweet, I say. That’s pretty much it.

What’s your favourite emoji and why?
🤭 ‘Cause I need people to shut up! I need people to shhhh more often.

Are you particular about your feed?
Yes oh. There is nothing I love more than when a topic is trending and I don’t see it on my TL, and I just see people complain about it. It means that I have picked my TL right!

YouTube or TikTok? Which do you prefer and why?
I think I’ll go with YouTube because it’s just broader. TikTok is just a lot of nonsense and short videos with random people. On YouTube, I just specify what I want and spiral down the similarities.

Which Nigerian creator do you think the world needs to see and hear more of?
All my Abuja artists. From the artists to the producers, the photographers, DJs, the Female artists, Male artists, groups, all of them. I need the whole of Abuja to be put on the map. So shoutout to all my Abuja artists, I love every single one of you. you’re the best.

Who is the coolest person you follow and the coolest person who follows you?
All my followers are the coolest. The coolest person I follow is my favourite band, ShowDemCamp. I love them so much. I met them last year and it was really one of the most amazing experiences I’ve ever had in my life.

What is your favourite Nigerian podcast?
I have a few. SOS Podcast, Musings podcast. I said what I said and Is This Seat Taken?

Have you ever hooked up with someone you met online?

Yes, I have.
