Former Sokoto State governor and senator representing Sokoto South district, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, is under investigation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) over alleged unauthorised cash withdrawals amounting to ₦189 billion during his time in office.
Tambuwal, who governed Sokoto State from 2015 to 2023 and previously served as Speaker of the House of Representatives, reportedly arrived at the EFCC headquarters in Abuja around 11:30 a.m. on Monday.
Sources within the anti-graft agency confirmed he is being questioned on transactions that allegedly contravene the Money Laundering (Prevention & Prohibition) Act, 2022.
A senior EFCC official, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the probe concerns “clear violations” of the law, adding that the investigation has been ongoing for several months. However, EFCC spokesperson Dele Oyewale declined to make an official statement, noting that comments would only be issued after the interrogation concludes.
Meanwhile, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Sokoto State has strongly criticised the EFCC’s actions, referring to the investigation as a politically motivated attempt to silence a leading opposition figure.
In a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary, Hassan Sahabi Sanyinnawal, the PDP described the case as a “resurrected and baseless” matter, alleging it is being pushed by political actors in Sokoto and Abuja who are intent on damaging Tambuwal’s reputation.
“This is a clear case of selective justice,” the statement read. “The EFCC is being used as a political tool to intimidate opponents, while the corruption of government allies goes unpunished.”
The party claimed that the matter had previously been dismissed, and accused “desperate political forces” of reviving it to weaken Tambuwal’s influence. It reaffirmed its confidence in his “unblemished credibility” and pledged to continue following his leadership in the struggle for political change.
The PDP has urged Nigerian anti-corruption agencies to maintain independence and resist political interference. It also appealed to the international community to “stand against the persecution of opposition leaders” and defend democratic principles in Nigeria.
“We call on our supporters and the people of Sokoto to remain calm, law-abiding, and resolute in their demand for genuine democracy and good governance,” the statement concluded.
As of now, the EFCC has not released further information regarding the ongoing investigation.
