Music producer-cum-artiste Pheelz has released a new music video today forPheelz Like Summer which is off his recent projectPheelz Good. The multi-talented Afrobeats star who started out as a beats maker is known for having segued from music production into singing, joining a list of other Nigerian artistes with similar career patterns, including Phyno, Samklef, Don Jazzy, and fellow ex-YBNL associate Young Jonn.
Recall that Pheelz Good EP was officially put out on February 10 this year across music streaming platforms, with eight tracks, and features guest performers Davido and BNXN on the album’s hit singlesElectricity andFinesse, respectively. With the album having hit over 100 million streams, it is lauded for being a tapestry of Pheelz’s Nigerian roots, dazzling sounds and romantic sensibilities. The album has been described as “a restatement of the artiste’s glorious becoming and a toast to his sonic efflorescence”.
Pandora and Amazon music recently acknowledged Pheelz as ‘Artist To Watch’ in 2023. Following the release of Finesse in 2022, the artiste was catapulted to global prominence, and he leveraged this with an impressive outing at Essence Fest’s Afrobeats After Dark party in New Orleans. He also appeared on US television for the first time, putting up a show on Late Night with Seth Meyers. Becoming the first Afrobeats singer to perform at the BET Awards Pre-Show, he was a nominee for Best New International Act category.
In the official video of Pheelz Like Summer, the theme of romantic love is explored over seemingly purpose-driven visuals in which Pheelz is often seen in the company of a female lover. It begins with monochromatic clips of the lovers being apart in a nondescript environment. The lady gets in touch with her man and in no time, the neutral colors give way to flamboyant images of the lovers huddled together. More scenes and the lovers are revealed in a club at some point, perhaps symbolic of a romantic climax. Just as the song title plays on the name of the artiste, the video plays on colors, with the drift from black-and-white monochrome appearing to illustrate the evolution of romantic love from simplistic infatuation into a seasoned affair.
