Professor calls for constitutional role for traditional rulers

Oshita Osung Oshita, Professor and Director General, Institute of Peace and Conflict Resolution, has called for more constitutional power to traditional rulers.

He argued that it will enable the monarchs check excesses of insecurity in their domains.

Prof Osita stated this at a one-day high level Roundtable Dialogue organized by Konrad Adenauer Foundation themed Strategies for Traditional/Ethnic and Religious leaders to effectively promote peaceful co-existence and sustainable development in multi ethnic and multi religious communities in Nigeria.

The don also referenced the pre-colonial era where intra and inter-communal relations were governed by traditional rulers.

He added that they were good in promoting peace building and conflict prevention among their subjects.
