Realness Institute, the organisation supporting the growth of African independent screen creatives, has appointed a new board of directors and alumni advisory council as it prepares for its next phase. The institute whose interest is in inspiring a new wave of African cinema, launched in 2015 and has created space for the development of multiple projects across 16 African countries in 5 years. Projects such as John Trengove’s The Wound, Waniru Kahiu’s Rafiki, Hajooj Kuka’s Akasha, Rungano Nyoni’s I Am Not A Witch, Lemohang Jeremiah Mosese’s This is Not a Burial It’s a Resurrection and others have benefited from the development structure of the institute.
The new Realness Institute board includes South African filmmaker Dillion Phiri; Nigerian talent manager and financier Enyinnaya Omeruah; Senegalese artist and filmmaker Moussa Sene Absa; and South African communications professional Thabiso Molefe. The board will offer its collective expertise towards Realness’ strategic direction, aiming to keep it grounded in the lived realities of African screen talent.
Realness has also founded a new Alumni Advisory Council to offer guidance on its programmes, and to develop an alumni network. The council consists of nine former Realness programme participants working across the African industry.

The Alumni Advisory Council includes Madagascar-France sales agent and consultant Berry Hahn; South African filmmaker-producer Godisamang Khunou Zimbabwean-South African screenwriter, director, and producer Kudi Maradzika, Nigerian screenwriter Omotunde Akiode, Mozambican director, artist, and producer Lara Sousa, Madagascan-French filmmaker-producer Maéva Ranaïvojaona, Nigerian producer and film finance professional Mimi Bartels, Zimbabwean director, producer and writer Tapiwa Chipfupa and South African story development executive and producer Tshenolo Mabale.
The Realness Institute has six programmes including the Creative Producer Indaba, Episodic Lab and Development Executive Traineeship (DET), The Development Executive Traineeship, Southern Africa-Locarno Industry Academy, and AuthenticA Series Lab have nurtured African storytellers with a physical and virtual designed space and community to workshop their ideas, find co-producers and investors, and pitch to streamers.
