Just over a year after making its feature film debut with Red Circle, Rixel Studios is aiming even higher.
The studio has announced Black Market, a new Nollywood feature directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay and slated for release on September 26, 2026, at Tafawa Balewa Square in Lagos.
And this time, Rixel is attempting something unprecedented for the Nigerian film industry: a Guinness World Records title for the largest film screening ever held in a single location.
In partnership with Filmone Studios, Signet Ring Studios, and Switch Visuals Production, the team plans to host 50,000 people for a single public screening of Black Market, surpassing the current Guinness World Records benchmark of 43,000 attendees.
For a film industry that has spent the last decade steadily expanding its global footprint through streaming platforms, international festivals, and increasingly ambitious theatrical releases, the attempt represents another effort to demonstrate Nollywood’s scale—not just in reach, but in physical audience.
“We are excited to go on this journey as a team and we have taken a lot of learnings from our previous film,” said Nora Awolowo, who leads the team at Rixel Studios. “As young filmmakers, one of our aims is to continue to creatively look for ways to innovate.“
Written by Abdul Tijani-Ahmed and Fatimah Binta Gimsay, Black Market was shot in Abeokuta and brings together an ensemble cast that includes Lateef Adedimeji, Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman, Itele D Icon, Scarlet Gomez, Omowunmi Dada, Teniola Aladese, Susan Pwajok, Uzor Arukwe, Folagade Banks, Tomiwa Tegbe, Andrew Yaw Bunting, Shamz Garuba, and Adeoluwa Akintoba.
For the filmmakers, the film’s ambition extends beyond breaking records.
“From Day One, we were determined to make a fun film and we made it with the best people,” director Fatimah Binta Gimsay said. “This was a great challenge for everyone and we can’t wait to share it with the world.“
For Filmone Studios, the event also reflects the growing confidence of an industry increasingly willing to think beyond conventional theatrical rollouts.
“We are incredibly excited,” said Filmone’s Chief Content Officer, Ladun Awobokun. “This is more than a film project. It’s an opportunity to create history and showcase Nigerian creativity and Nollywood on a global stage.“
That spirit of experimentation is echoed by Switch Visuals Production, another partner on the project.
“There is nothing more inspiring to me than seeing young people challenge conventions and push the boundaries of innovation,” said the company’s CEO, Damilola Osikoya. “This project is especially close to my heart because it represents what is possible when bold ideas meet determination and collaboration.“
While large-scale premieres have become increasingly common within Nollywood, an event of this magnitude represents a significant logistical undertaking. It would not only secure a place in the Guinness World Records, but would also stand as one of the largest public film screenings ever staged anywhere in the world.
The event is being delivered in partnership with MTN and Swoop, with further details expected in the lead-up to the September screening.
