With her signature blend of jazzy instrumentals, Yoruba lyrics, and crystal-clear storytelling, Ṣẹwà captures the kind of love that lingers long after it’s gone. She opens the track with scatting harmonies, introducing us to her incredible vocals which glide over the track, smooth and clear. Her voice dips and lilts, and even on the segments of the track where her tone lowers to a soft growl, she does so with impeccable technique and maintains the sweet melodies which makes this breakup song feel like a love song. 

Her voice mimics the instruments she is accompanied by on the track, stands out on the segments where she is accompanied by a choir and commands attention throughout – we are presented with a swirling symphony of sounds, but her voice is never drowned out and is consistently the focal point of the record. 

The title might hint at romance, but the song dives into something deeper, a reflection on trust, emotional games, the strength it takes to move on and the intoxicating freedom on the other side.

Her chant at the bridge, “Put my trust in you, and you broke it too … I’m so done with all the shit you put me through” at which point her voice lowers to an almost taunting whisper only to swell in volume almost immediately after, is an accurate summary of the message of this song – she might have been knocked down, but she is standing right back up. 

Following a string of sold-out shows in Toronto and Lagos, Ṣẹwà is building momentum ahead of her debut album which promises to be as soulful, silky and vocally stacked as this single.
